Do I have to have a balance board to use EA Sports Active?

When am I supposed to turn the balance board on? If I turn it on when the game it starting up, it doesn’t use the board even though I checked that I have a balance board and want to use it. If I turn it on right before I check that box, sometimes it works. Any advice as to when to turn the board on to get the game to use in during the activities?
